Installation instructions: We recommend that you rinse the substrate once before installing. Before filling your aquarium with water, place a piece of cardboard or plastic on top of the substrate to deflect the water as you pour it in. This will prevent the water from churning the substrate and clouding the water.

How do I calculate how much I need for my aquarium?

5 gallon bucket will cover: 4 sq ft at a depth of 3"
(a 55 gallon aquarium measures 48" by 12" or 4 sq ft.)
equilavant to 6 bags of "eco-complete !
approx 1.25 gallons of substrate per square foot. (note: if you slope or create hills, you will need to order more)

First time in awhile starting a new tank and after much researched bought this stuff. It is wonderful my buddy set up a tank three months before and already my plants are much larger than his. I also love the bucket!!

After much research in Dec 2009 I purchased this substrate for my 3 tanks, 75gal and 2 20's. Now April 2010 and my plants are beautiful, and the fish adore it, easy for them to root around in and build, no sore noses. I highly recommend it!! Love the buckets!

I have been using this in a small 10 gallon tank for one year. I also use the fertilizer pellets once per month.

My plants are thriving and I bought the slow growing anubis and Java Fern. They have tripled in size with no CO2. Light, fertilzer and substrate. That's it.

The substrate does not turn to muck and stays very granular one year later. Two thumbs up!

How many buckets will I need for a 55 gallon aquarium, and does the black diamond look bluish in the water or it just looks like that in the picture?

This substrate is wonderful. Not only are my plants doing great, but the fish love it too because it's soft to them. They also design the substrate the way they want it. You can bet this is all I will use from now own. And, the Black Diamond looks so lovely in the tank. Thanks Aquariumplants for formulating such a wonderful product.
