Installation instructions:  We recommend that you rinse the substrate once before installing.  Before filling your aquarium with water, place a piece of cardboard or plastic on top of the substrate to deflect the water as you pour it in.  This will prevent the water from churning the substrate and clouding the water.

How do I calculate how much I need for my aquarium?
  • 5 gallon bucket will cover: 4 sq ft at a depth of 3"
  • (a 55 gallon aquarium measures 48" by 12" or 4 sq ft.)
  • equilavant to 6 bags of "eco-complete !
  • approx 1.25 gallons of substrate per square foot. (note: if you slope or create hills, you will need to order more)

In comparison to "Eco-complete":   Eco-complete takes 120 lbs (6 bags) to cover the same area, at a cost of over $180.00 !!!     Shipped in a FREE bucket...great to keep around for water changes etc.

great for plants June 4, 2009
Reviewer: Cathy Hanson from San Antonio, TX United States
This is a great substrate.  I had plants that were almost dead. When I replanted them in this substrate they perked right up.  Growing nicely now and faster than ever.

Beautiful Black Substrate May 11, 2009
Reviewer: Rodney Pelles from Toccoa, GA United States
If you want beautiful live plants in your aquarium then don't cut corners with your substrate.  This beautiful black substrate provides the fuel your plants need to grow.  Cut the fuel and you'll cut the life source from your plants.  Don't forget to have proper lighting as well.  This substrate also provides a nice contrast with the plants and fish and because it is dark, the fish appear to be less stress due to its non reflective surface.  This is especially true for most plecos since they are nocturnal in nature.  The more natural your aquarium looks the more natural your fish will act. A+++++++

Very Pleased.... April 26, 2009
Reviewer: Timothy Gray from Ballwin, MO United States
What a great product!  I recently swapped out all my gravel in my 125G with this substrate and I couldn't be happier.  Some of my plants that were on the edge of extinction have come back to life and the others have never looked so good.  I am going to try the fertilizer pellets next and see how that goes...

Also, the customer service at aquariumplants.com is amazing.  I called on a Sunday thinking I would get a recording but it was worth a try.  I was able to speak to someone who answered all 300 questions I had ( however annoying that must have been haha). Big thanks to Mark and all the people at aquariumplants.com!

AquariumPlants Substrate April 5, 2009
Reviewer: Julius Metts from Orlando, FL United States
As a relative newcomer to planted aquariums I tried several products...I am convinced that this one is undoubtedly the best over all...Without CO2 addition I have had fabulous results with minimal effort...It does seem to produce a somewhat acidic environment, but not excessive...Very pleased!!!!!

new convert September 9, 2008
Reviewer: kay prien from shallowater, TX United States
i have tried in the past to make a planted aquarium without success. this time i started from scratch with this companys items and everything is growing wildly. the dark color of the substrate sets off the color of the plants nicely and the ph is staying lower than with other substrates i have used.
