Vallisneria spiralis, also known as Straight Vallisneria, Tape grass, or Eel grass is a common aquarium plant that prefers good light and a nutrient rich substrate. In the wild, it can be found in tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide. It has narrow, linear leaves that range in colour from a pale-green to reddish up to 3 feet (1 m) long and up to 0.75 inches broad. V. spiralis is monoecious with flowers carried on long spiral stalks that break away from the plant and float on the water's surface. Seeds have not been observed germinating in aquaria. Instead, it most often propagates by runners which can lead to dense stands.

very nice plant November 11, 2012
Reviewer: Kimberly Hill from Norman, OK United States
I bought 5 bunches of this plant.  They arrived in great condition.  They bent over the top of the water quite a bit.  The tank is 18".  Vals, are a pain to plant.  Keeping just the crown of the plant in the substrate without them popping out is irritating.  I trimmed many down to the water level so they would not shade other plants.  Some tolerated it well and some of them turned brown for an inch beneath the cutting point.  That was two weeks ago and they are starting to recover.  These are beautiful plants, but I never have great luck with them.  This was my first order here and so far these Vals are faring quite well compared to my others.  I think they will actually continue to live. The tank is 75 gallons with four T8 bulbs that are 500K and 6500K.  I dose twice a week with Flourish and every other day with Excel.  I have Eco complete substrate.  The water is soft and acidic and the tank is kept at about 70 degrees.  There is no CO2 system.

vals February 18, 2010
Reviewer: jeff lirette from modesto, CA United States
I was dissappointed when I first recieved my vals. They were beat up from shipping and had alot of algae on them. However after a few days they started sending up new leaves like crazy and after only 5 days I have about 12 runners. The vals were also about 12" when I got them.
