Cryptocoryne undulata is a popular and hardy aquatic plant in the Cryptocoryne genus, widely used in freshwater aquariums for its textured, wavy leaves and adaptability. Here’s a detailed description:

General Description

  • Size: Small to medium; typically 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) tall, though leaves may grow slightly longer under ideal conditions

  • Leaves:

    • Shape: Lanceolate with pronounced wavy or undulating edges (hence the name “undulata”)

    • Color: Medium to dark green; may develop reddish-brown tones under lower light or certain conditions

    • Arrangement: Rosette form, with new leaves growing from a central crown

Aquarium Care

  • Lighting: Low to moderate; very adaptable, making it suitable for low-light aquariums

  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate preferred; absorbs nutrients through roots

  • CO₂ and Fertilization: Optional; will grow without CO₂ but benefits from liquid fertilizers for denser growth

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • Water Parameters: Soft to moderately hard water, pH 6.0–7.5

  • Special Notes: Like other Cryptocorynes, may undergo “Crypt melt” when first introduced to a new tank but recovers over time

Uses in Aquascaping

  • Ideal for foreground or midground planting due to its compact size

  • Adds texture and depth to the aquarium with its wavy leaves

  • Forms dense clumps, providing hiding spots for shrimp, fry, and small fish

  • Slow to moderate growth; leaves can be trimmed to maintain a tidy appearance
